Supporting a Child's Temperature Naturally with doTERRA

Updated: Dec 12

As a mum of three, I know how stressful it can be when one of your little ones is under the weather. When my youngest was three, I started exploring essential oils, and they quickly became a comforting part of our home routine. While oils are not a replacement for medical care, they’ve helped us feel more in control and supported — especially during those wobbly fever days.

A fever is actually the body’s way of fighting off infection, so instead of rushing to suppress it with with medication like Calpol, I focus on soothing, comforting, and supporting my kids while their bodies do the work.

If you’re searching the internet for answers right now, I can’t help you in the moment — I know how overwhelming it is to figure out what’s safe and effective. However, if this information resonates with you, let’s help you start on a natural support journey so you have the tools and confidence for the next time your child is in this situation.

Top doTERRA Oils for Comfort & Immune Support

Here’s how to use essential oils to help soothe your child during a fever — while supporting the immune system, reducing discomfort, and calming the nervous system.

1. Cooling & Comfort: Peppermint & Lavender

  • Peppermint (diluted): When little ones feel hot or uncomfortable, mix 1 drop with 1–2 tsp carrier oil and apply it to the soles of the feet, back of the neck, or spine. A cool damp cloth on top can feel lovely too.

  • Lavender: Diffuse in their room or use a few drops (diluted) on the chest or back to help calm restlessness and support sleep.

Tip: For babies under 3 months, skip peppermint and stick with gentler oils like lavender or Tea Tree (Melaleuca) if needed.

I’ll be adding some rollerballs to the “Buy Now” kit along with fractionated coconut oil so you can easily create your own application rollers — perfect for simple, mess‑free use at home.

2. Immune Support: On Guard & Tea Tree (Melaleuca)

  • On Guard: Dilute and roll onto the spine and soles of the feet for older kids — it’s one of those oils I love having on hand for everyday immune support.

  • Tea Tree (Melaleuca): A gentle option for supporting healthy skin and general cleansing applications (always diluted and avoiding eyes/face).

Making your own rollerballs with fractionated coconut oil makes application easy and gives you one less thing to think about when kids need comfort.

3. Soothe Tummies & Tension: ZenGest & Peppermint

Sometimes when my kids feel off, their tummies or little heads can feel uncomfortable.

  • ZenGest (diluted): A gentle tummy rub with this blend can be calming — especially after snacks that didn’t quite agree.

  • Peppermint (diluted): For older kids, a light massage on the temples (away from eyes) can help ease tension.

Again, always dilute well and be mindful of sensitive areas.

4. Soothing & Relaxation: Frankincense & Deep Blue

  • Frankincense: Diffuse for a grounding, calming atmosphere in the home, or dilute and roll on the chest/back for moments of overwhelm.

  • Deep Blue: A favourite to soothe aches and provide a comforting cooling sensation — especially on tired little legs or backs after a busy day.

5. Clear Air & Refreshing Scent: doTERRA Air & Lemon

  • doTERRA Air: Diffusing this blend can create a refreshing aroma — great on stuffy days when we’re all craving fresh vibes.

  • Lemon: Diffuse or use in homemade cleaning sprays for a bright, uplifting atmosphere. And while I don’t put oils in my kids’ drinks, a Lemon‑scented diffuser session while they drink water always helps encourage hydration.

Important Safety Reminders

  • Always dilute essential oils for children (e.g., 1 drop essential oil to 1 tsp carrier oil).

  • Avoid oils near eyes, ears, or broken skin.

  • Monitor temperature and energy levels — seek medical attention if the child is listless, dehydrated, or the fever is high or prolonged.

  • These remedies are supportive, not curative — trust your instincts as a caregiver.

My Takeaway

For me, essential oils are about comfort, connection, and gentle support  not about “fighting the fever.” Paired with hydration, rest, probiotics, and nutrient‑rich foods, you’ve got a natural, nurturing toolkit for those sick days.

If this resonates with you, let’s get you started on your natural support journey so you’ll feel confident and prepared the next time your child is under the weather.

Bonus Tip: With the fractionated rollerballs in your kit, you can easily make your own application rollers at home — perfect for quick, simple use whenever a little one needs comforting.
